The Chamber of Aquaculture Ghana has recognized Mordecai Farms as a success story in the country’s growing aquaculture sector. With a commitment to sustainability and innovation, Mordecai Farms has set new benchmarks in fish farming. Founded by Mr. Seth Boakye-Dankwah, the farm has rapidly evolved into a model for modern aquaculture practices in Ghana, combining cutting-edge technology with environmentally friendly operations.
Mr. Boakye-Dankwah’s decision to establish Mordecai Farms was driven by a desire to reinvest in Ghana after a distinguished career in global finance. A conference in Egypt, where he met a pioneer in the industry, sparked his interest in aquaculture. Reports from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture further reinforced his conviction that aquaculture was a sector with immense potential. This led him to embark on a journey to establish a state-of-the-art fish farm in Ghana.

Mordecai Farms officially began operations in February 2023 after extensive preparation and testing. The farm utilizes a sophisticated Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS), which ensures efficient water usage and optimal fish health. Sustainability is at the heart of its operations, with solar energy powering the farm and water sourced from three boreholes, all connected through an advanced piping system. Water quality is closely monitored with daily pH and temperature checks to maintain ideal conditions for fish cultivation.
One of the standout features of Mordecai Farms is its advanced hatchery and incubation units, which play a critical role in breeding healthy fish stock. Effluents from the hatchery are repurposed for agricultural use, demonstrating an integrated approach to farming. The Farms hatchery consists of four main units • Incubation Units: This is where the spawning process takes place, producing the fry. • Fry Units: The newly hatched fry are transferred here, where they spend about two (2) weeks. • Holding Tanks: The fry are then moved to the holding tanks. • Fingerlings Tank/ Main system: The final stage, where the fish grow into fingerlings.

In the other units, the water that leaves the tank never comes back but in the main system units, the water is recirculated and filtered. The farm currently operates 32 tanks in the grow-out. Six (6) are reserved for the breeding pairs of brood stock and the 26 for production. The production system is a decoupled system where fish are nurtured under controlled conditions. Mordecai Farms is engaged in both the sale of fresh catfish and processed catfish securely packaged in sealed pouches, ensuring that consumers receive high-quality, ready-to-use catfish.
Initially, the farm explored the idea of aquaponics, but market research revealed a lower-than-expected demand for vegetables in Ghana. However, Mordecai Farms remains committed to agricultural diversification. It currently operates three greenhouses, cultivating organic vegetables such as tomatoes and green peppers, with plans to expand further soon.

Beyond its contributions to aquaculture, Mordecai Farms is dedicated to reducing unemployment among the youth, particularly in this era of advanced technology. By providing job opportunities and hands-on training in modern fish farming techniques, the farm plays a crucial role in empowering young people and equipping them with skills for sustainable livelihoods.
As part of its role in promoting aquaculture, the Chamber of Aquaculture Ghana has taken a keen interest in Mordecai Farms’ innovative production systems. In preparation for Aquaculture Ghana 2025, the Chamber has highlighted Mordecai Farms as a model for sustainable fish farming in the country.
With its dedication to sustainability, advanced technology, and expansion into organic farming, Mordecai Farms is poised to shape the future of aquaculture in Ghana and beyond. The farm’s success serves as an inspiration for others in the industry, proving that with vision, innovation, and commitment, aquaculture can thrive in Ghana’s agricultural landscape.
